After WILLIAM MASON (English, 1724 - 1797), Scene in a country town at the time of a race, oil on artists board, circa 1850s, 42 x 55cm. A remarkably detailed and fine painting of the scene depicted in an etching published in 1783 by Valentine Green. (A hand-coloured example is held by the British Museum). The painting has been done on art board purchased from Geo. Rowney & Co., when the company was at 51 Rathbone Place, London in the 1850s. (see label verso).
