These large and very accurate clocks were produced from the 1730s onwards and were placed in taverns and Inns throughout Britain. Often referred to as Act Of Parliament Clocks, in 1797 the British Government levied a yearly tax of 5 shillings on all clocks. The unpopular tax was repealed a year later.
